Authors at the Inn

store
inn Mark your calendars and save the date! On Friday, May 13, 2016 from 6-9 pm the Victoria Inn (430 High St, Hampton) plays host to another popular Authors at the Inn book sale and signing.

It's said there are ghosts in the historic Victoria Inn. Strange noises have been reported, and the essence of an old woman has been spotted in the halls.

Today's Inn was formerly the carriage house for the Leonia Hotel, which opened in 1895, then was enlarged in 1896 and 1897 to accommodate 60 guests, with stables for 14 of their horses.

With dance and music halls, card and billiard rooms, a dining hall and private dining room, broad piazzas and tennis courts, the Leonia was the place to stay at Hampton Beach during the summer.

In 1900, the Leonia burned to the ground, but the carriage house survived. Moved from the back to the front of the property, the carriage house was redesigned as a guesthouse and became a family residence. In 1988, it was converted to a Bed & Breakfast, and continues to operate as such today.

The Leonia Hotel was originally the Edmund Mason house, so through the years and physical changes, any number of spirits could have stayed on.

Might they be present on Friday May 13, when 13 local authors gather at Victoria Inn to discuss local history, mystery, legend and lore? You, too, are invited.

The authors are K.D. Mason, Amy Ray, Roxie Zwicker, Matthew Thomas, Cheryl Lassiter, Karen Raynes, Marcia Burber, Elly Becotte, Betty Moore, Elizabeth Akyroyd, Rev. Deborah Knowlton and Tom and Rosemarie Claire.

"Authors at the Inn," co-sponsored by the Hampton Historical Society and Victoria Inn, takes place from 6-9 p.m. There will be readings, music, book signings, a raffle, complimentary appetizers and a cash bar.
