Share Matthew Thomas's passion for powder houses at the Hampton Historical Society's annual meeting on Friday, October 14. Thomas's presentation, "Powder Houses of New England," will take place following a short annual meeting at 6:30 p.m.

Thomas will tell the fascinating story of New England powder houses and the role they played in establishing American independence. He will discuss these forgotten and little known historic landmarks that house barrels of gunpowder, ammunition and military supplies. There were more than 200 powder houses scattered around New England; only 54 still exist.

Historic Powder Houses Thomas is author of Historic Powder Houses of New England: Arsenals of American Independence. He founded New England Historical Research Associates in 1978, and currently serves as president and curator of the Fremont, New Hampshire Historical Society.

The Hampton Historical Society is engaged in increasing knowledge and understanding of Hampton's history and cultural heritage through the Tuck Museum, a new research center, educational programs and community outreach.

All are welcome to attend the annual meeting and the powder houses program. All is free and will be held at the Tuck Museum, 40 Park Avenue, Hampton. For more information call 603-926-2543.
